Funded by the HLF, the first National Football Museum opened in Preston in 2001 and was housed in two galleries, directly underneath the Preston North End stadium itself, the oldest football ground in England. The Finney Gallery displayed the unique FIFA collection, and underneath the Shankly stand, an interactive Exploratorium enabling visitors to understand innovations in the game today.
