Moving Objects – A History of Automotive Design

Ford Motor Cars, Royal College of Art, London
1999, £565k

Fraser Randall was appointed as the Project and Design Manager for a dazzling celebration of 30 years of the Vehicle Design course at the RCA sponsored by Ford.

The exhibition was creatively overseen by Stephen Bayley as Ford's consultant for global design aesthetic, with the vision that the cars were to be seen as hi-end premium art pieces. The cars, models and flat artwork were displayed on interpretations of the standard white plinth and lit dramatically.

It was also essential to display the subconscious brand properties of Ford such as build quality, cutting edge design, and cost effectiveness to their full. We worked very closely with Bayley to achieve an art installation as has never been seen at the RCA, which was attended by the highest levels of Ford management to showcase the first public viewing of the new Thunderbird.

The exhibition was also installed at the London Motor Show.
