John Murray Archive
National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh
2007, £853k
Fraser Randall was appointed by the National
Library of Scotland to act as the Construction Manager for the John
Murray Archive exhibition which is housed in the National Library
of Scotland.
Edinburgh-born publisher John Murray started
the collection when he set up his business in London in the late
18th Century. The Archive is thought to be one of the world's most
significant literary and cultural archives from the past 250 years.
With more than 150,000 items, it contains letters, manuscripts and
journals from some of the greatest writers, politicians and scientists
from 1768 to 1920.
The exhibition was designed in order that the original objects be interpreted through ‘conversations’
the visitor has with each character using lighting and AV
interfaces. There is also provision to rotate the collection to
ensure rigorous conservation standards are achieved and more of
the collection can be displayed to the public.
